Client Volunteer of the Year awarded at our Graduation

Wendy Martin, of Birmingham, has been honoured for her voluntary work over the past ten years, raising awareness and funds for Support Dogs at our annual Awards and Graduation Ceremony, hosted by staff and patrons.

Wendy travelled hundreds of miles around the country, this year alone, with her Support Dog Oscar and it was for this and many other reason we awarded her Client Volunteer of the Year.

From giving talks to schools and community groups, to giving up her weekends and evenings to act as an ambassador for the charity, Wendy has represented Support Dogs at a wide ranwendy-and-oscarge of country shows and events in 2016.

The ceremony also marked the successful completion of almost two years of training by many other assistance dogs, who provide vital support to children with autism and those affected by disability and epilepsy.

The event, held in Sheffield, is also an opportunity to celebrate the contribution of volunteers and donors to Support Dogs’ work across the country.

Wendy said: “The reason I travel around fundraising for this wonderful charity is because it is a way I can repay them for training my wonderful dogs over the years.

My current dog Oscar has been a big help to me. As well as helping me to get dressed, he puts washing in the machine and fetches the phone.  He can open doors and helps me out of bed each morning.  If I fall and can’t move, Oscar is trained to touch my careline button so that I can ask for help.

“I am so grateful to Support dogs for training my dogs.   They are currently training up a two year old chocolate Labrador called Riley to take on Oscar’s role when he retires next year.”

Danny Anderson, fundraising manager at Support Dogs, said: “Our awards and graduation ceremony is hugely memorable because of the all the wonderful people who support us. Our heartfelt thanks and congratulations go to Wendy for her valuable efforts to keep raising awareness and funds on our behalf.”
